Heat Loans and Rebates

Through Mass Save, you can save money and time with rebates and heat loans on Cape Cod, Plymouth, MA, and surrounding areas. The first (and required) step in taking advantage of Mass Save incentives is to have a no-cost home energy assessment by a Mass Save-approved contractor.   

Mass Save HEAT Loan:

Financing for qualifying, energy-efficient HVAC equipment, insulation, and single pane windows to be upgraded

Program and participating lender approval is required

Must have a home energy assessment by Mass Save approved home performance contractor before applying.

Mass Save HEAT Loan:

  • Offers 0% interest financing for eligible energy efficient upgrades.
  • Program and participating lender approval is required.
  • Must have a home energy assessment by a Mass Save approved home performance contractor.
  • May be eligible for financing up to $25,000 for qualifying energy efficient upgrades.
  • For heat pump installs one can qualify for up to $50,000 for energy efficient upgrades

Qualifiers for up to $25,000 total are as follows:

  • Weatherization
  • Pre-weatherization barriers
  • Condensing boilers and furnaces (Heat loan authorization letter must be requested by 4/30/23 in order to qualify.)
  • Water heaters; oil, propane, gas (Heat loan authorization letter must be requested by 4/30/23 in order to qualify.)
  • Energy Star certified replacement windows (Must be in conjunction with completed weatherization recommendations.)
  • Residential batteries enrolled in ConnectedSolutions

Qualifiers for up to $50,000 total are as follows:

  • Weatherization (Must be installed in conjunction with program-eligible heat pump project.)
  • Pre-weatherization barriers (Must be installed in conjunction with program-eligible heat pump project.)
  • Heat pump projects
  • Heat pump water heaters

Heat loans are available to qualified customers who are participating in the Mass Save Program. To apply for any Heat loan you must be the homeowner. Residents applying for the Heat loan must have a current residential electric account. If you are a municipal electrical customer you may take advantage of the offer if your home is heated with natural gas that is provided by a Mass Save Sponsor. Financing is only available for qualifying energy efficient improvements and is contingent upon approval from participating lenders.

REBATES

The following is a list and brief description of the rebates being offered through the Mass Save Program. Please be advised, rebate amounts subject to change. The program is subject to change at any time, as are rebates and savings.

Heat Pumps – limited to 1 whole home heat pump rebate which cannot exceed the total install cost:

  • Air to Water Heat Pumps – offer a Whole-Home rebate that is $10,000/home. Must meet energy efficiency requirement: MassSave.com/HPQPL.
  • Air Source Heat Pumps – offer both Partial-Home and Whole-Home rebates. Partial-home rebate amount is $1,250/ton. Whole-home rebate is $10,000/home. Must meet energy efficiency requirement: MassSave.com/HPQPL
  •  

Ground Source Heat Pumps – offer both Partial-Home and Whole-Home rebates. Partial-home rebate is $2,000 per ton. Whole-home rebate is $15,000/home. Must be ENERGY STAR certified to meet efficiency requirements.

Terms & Conditions:

(Other offers available for those who qualify for other income based incentives. Customers with pre-existing natural gas heat are not qualified for income based incentives.) Effective JANUARY 1, 2024 only customers who have removed or disabled their pre-existing heating systems will be eligible for whole-home heat pump rebates. Approved disablement methods will be listed on the 2024 Whole-Home Heat Pump Verification Form and are verified during the post-installation inspections. Rebates are based on whether heat pump system is serving as whole-home which is offered to those who are installing the heat pump as their sole source of heating and cooling, or partial-home which is based on equipment size/tonnage and who plan to keep their existing boiler or furnace in place to supplement the heat pump. Homeowners who wish to get the rebate must also have any weatherization work done that has been recommended by the program to qualify for the rebate. Equipment must be installed between January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024. Equipment must be ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certified. Rebate paperwork including the rebate form and supporting documents must be received by February 28, 2025. Rebates are only available to residences that are occupied FULL TIME DURING THE WINTER HEATING SEASON.

Offers are valid only for residential customers replacing oil, propane, or electric resistant heating systems where the Mass Save Electric Sponsor is: CLC, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil. Offers are only valid for customers who are replacing gas heating systems where the Mass Save Natural Gas Sponsor is: Berkshire Gas, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil.

Boilers and Furnaces:

  • Natural Gas Rebates – these are tier based. Tier I rebates are specific to customers upgrading a condensing boiler/furnace with another condensing boiler/furnace. Tier II rebates are for residents upgrading a non-condensing boiler/furnace with a condensing boiler/furnace and pre-verification is required prior to install. All tiers require equipment to meet a specific efficiency requirement.
  • Hot Air Furnace with ECM offer a Tier I rebate of $200/unit and a Tier II rebate of between $400/unit and $700/unit.
    • Hot Water Boiler offer a Tier I rebate of $200/unit and a Tier II rebate of $1,500/unit.
    • Combined Condensing Boiler with On-Demabnd Water Heater is a general rebate of $900/unit.
    • Combined Condensing Furnace with ECM and On-Demand Domestic Water Heater is a general rebate of $500/unit
    • Oil Rebates – must meet an Energy Requirement and is only available for Hot Air Furnace with ECM. The rebate is $400/unit.
    • Propane Rebates – these are tier based. Tier I rebates are specific to customers upgrading a condensing boiler/furnace with another condensing boiler/furnace. Tier II rebates are for residents upgrading a non-condensing boiler/furnace with a condensing boiler/furnace and pre-verification is required prior to install. All tiers require equipment to meet a specific efficiency requirement.
      • Hot Air Furnace with ECM offer a Tier I rebate of $200/unit and a Tier II rebate of $400/unit.
      • Hot Water Boiler offers a Tier I rebate of $200/unit and a Tier II rebate of $1,500/unit.
      • Combined Condensing Boiler with On-Demand Water Heater is a general rebate of $900/unit.
      • Combined Condensing Furnace with ECM and On-Demand Domestic Water Heater is a general rebate of $500/unit

 

Participation is based on fuel and equipment currently used to heat the home. To qualify for these rebates you will need to have your existing heating system verified during a home energy assessment to determine whether it’s non-condensing. A licensed plumber or contractor must do the install. All rebates must be applied for online. Eligibility is based on fuel and equipment currently used to heat the home.

  • For Natural Gas offers are valid only for residential customers in Massachusetts where the Mass Save Sponsor is Berkshire Gas, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil. Equipment must be installed by licensed contractor/plumber between January 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024, and must be new and meet minimum efficiency requirements. Rebate form and supporting documents must be received by September 30, 2024.
  • For Oil offers are only valid where the Mass Save Electric Sponsor is: CLC, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil. Equipment must be installed by licensed contractor/plumber between January 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024, and must be new and meet minimum efficiency requirements. Rebate form and supporting documents must be received by September 30, 2024.
  • For Propane offers are only valid where the Mass Save Electric Sponsor is: CLC, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil. Equipment must be installed by licensed contractor/plumber between January 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024, and must be new and meet minimum efficiency requirements. Rebate form and supporting documents must be received by September 30, 2024.

Integrated Controls – Receive up to $1,500 when you install an integrated control with an existing air source heat pump system. Offers are valid only for residential customers in Massachusetts where the Mass Save Sponsor is Berkshire Gas, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil. The unit must be installed between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. The unit must be new, and installed as an add-on to an existing air source heat pump, and rebate form and documentation must be received by February 28, 2025.

Room Air Conditioners – Purchase an ENERGY STAR-certified room air conditioner and get a $40. This offer is only available to Massachusetts residential electric customers of Cape Light Compact JPE, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil. The limit is 2 rebates per account per calendar year. Rebate is for purchases made between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, and all rebate applications and necessary materials must be postmarked or submitted online by January 31st, 2025.

Smart & Programmable Thermostats – Purchase a qualifying smart or programmable thermostat and get up to $100 per thermostat. Limits are 3 rebates not to exceed the total install cost.

  • Programmable Thermostats – Required to be 7-Day Programmable – Rebate is $25/unit.
  • Smart Thermostat – Must be Energy Star certified – Rebate is $100/unit.
  • Integrated Control – Rebate is $500 per indoor unit refer to MassSave.com/ICQPL for efficiency requirements.

Offer only valid for residential customers in Massachusetts where the program sponsor is Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil. Units must be installed between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, and must be new. All rebate documentation must be received by January 30, 2025.

Water Heaters – Receive up to $1500 per system. All fossil fuel must be installed by August 31, 2024, and rebate applications must be submitted/postmarked by September 30, 2024, to be eligible. The limit is 1 water heater rebate not to exceed the total installation cost. Must meet a specific efficiency requirement

  • Replacing Oil, Propane, Natural Gas, or Electric Resistance – Heat pump water heaters receive up to $750 per unit. Split system heat pump water heaters receive up to $1,500 per system.

Storage & Indirect Water Heaters – purchase an energy-efficient storage or indirect water heater and get up to $350 back. Rebates are based on fuel type and equipment currently being used to heat water in the home. Must meet a specified energy efficiency requirement.

  • Natural Gas Storage Water Heater – Rebate is $50/unit
  • Oil Indirect Water Heater – Must be attached to an oil-fired heating system and replace a freestanding or tankless water heater. Solar storage tanks are not eligible. The rebate amount is $250/unit.
  • Propane Indirect Water Heater – Must be attached to an oil-fired heating system and replace a freestanding or tankless water heater. Solar storage tanks are not eligible. The rebate amount is $250/unit.

Participation is based on fuel and equipment currently used to heat water in your home. Offer only valid for residential customers in Massachusetts where the program sponsor is Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil. Equipment must be installed by a licensed contractor or plumber between January 1, 2024, and August 31, 2024. Equipment must be new and meet minimum energy efficiency requirements. All rebate forms and paperwork must be received by September 30, 2024.

Tankless (On Demand Water Heaters) – Purchase an energy-efficient on-demand water heater – and get up to $450 back. They must meet the required efficiency to qualify.

  • Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater – Rebate is $450/unit
  • Natural Gas Condensing (on-demand) water heater – Rebate I $300/unit
  • Propane Tankless on Demand Water Heater – Rebate is $450/unit

Participation is based on the field and equipment currently used to heat water in your home. A licensed contractor or plumber must install the eligible equipment. All rebate paperwork must be submitted online. Offer only valid for residential customers in Massachusetts where the program sponsor is Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil. Equipment must be installed between January 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024. Rebate form and paperwork must be received by September 30, 2024.

Windows – Save $75 per window when you upgrade your single-pane windows to ENERGY STAR “Most Efficient” certified windows.

  • To qualify existing windows must be verified during a home energy assessment or a virtual special home visit. The energy specialist will verify the number of windows eligible for replacement.
  • Any recommended insulation and air sealing work the specialist suggests must be completed to receive the incentive. (This maximizes the efficiency of the window install.)
  • Windows must be certified by ENERGY STAR for the Northern Region and listed on the “Most Efficient” list; found at masssave.com/windowqpl under the “Most Efficient” and “Northern Region.”
    • The rebate may be applied for either online or by mailing in the rebate form.

Offer only valid for residential customers in Massachusetts where the program sponsor is Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil. Rebate is only valid for purchases made from January 1, 2024, through December 31, 2024. Applications for the 2024 rebate and all necessary material must be postmarked or submitted by January 31, 2025.

  • Clothes Dryer – Purchase an ENERGY STAR-certified clothes dryer and get a $50 rebate. Limit to one dryer rebate per account per calendar year.

  • Clothes Washer – Purchase an ENERGY STAR-certified clothes washer and get up to a $150 rebate.
    • You must have an energy assessment to qualify for the rebate. The energy assessor will verify the existing washer.
    • The existing washer must be top-loading with an agitator to qualify and must be functioning during the time of the assessment.

Offer only valid for residential customers in Massachusetts where the program sponsor is Cape Light Compact JPE, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil. The rebate is valid for purchases from January 1, 2024, through December 31, 2024. Applications for 2024 rebates and all necessary materials must be postmarked or submitted online by January 31, 2025.

 

Dehumidifiers – Purchase an ENERGY STAR-certified dehumidifier and get a $30 rebate. To use rebate you will need your utility account number on hand.

    • Offer only valid for residential customers in Massachusetts where the program sponsor is Cape Light Compact JPE, Eversource, National Grid, or Unitil.
    • Residents are not required to get an energy assessment to qualify.
    • Limited to 2 dehumidifier rebates per account per calendar year.
    • Rebate is valid for purchases made January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024
    • Application for 2024 rebates and all necessary materials must be postmarked or submitted online by January 31, 2025

Induction Stove – Replace a natural gas or propane stove with an induction stove and get a $500 rebate.

  • To qualify your existing natural gas or propane stove must be verified during a Home Energy Assessment or Virtual Special Home Visit.
  • Offer only valid for residential customers in Massachusetts where the program sponsor is Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil who have an existing natural gas or propane stove.
  • Limited to one induction stove per rebate per account.
  • To qualify, you must have your existing natural gas or propane stove verified prior to removal.
  • Rebate is valid for purchases made January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024
  • Application for 2024 rebates and all necessary materials must be postmarked or submitted online by January 31, 2025

Lawn Equipment – Switch to battery-powered lawn equipment and get rebates up to $75

  • Lawnmower – Rebate of $75
  • Leaf Blower – Rebate of $30
  • String Trimmer – Rebate of $30
  • Chainsaw – Rebate of $30

There are 3 ways to receive rebates on battery-powered lawn equipment:

  1. Purchase equipment and apply for a rebate online or by mail
  2. Get instant rebates at participating retailers.
    • Visit the links at MassSave.com/savings validate your eligibility and receive a code
    • You will need your utility account handy.
    • Present the code at the register and an instant rebate will be applied to the purchase price.
  3. Get instant rebates on the Mass Save Marketplace.
    • Login to the Mass Save Marketplace and explore instant discounts on available lawn equipment.
